   During a muggy July, Julian’s father had a mild heart scare. He spent two weeks helping at the shop, watching his father banter with regulars and pretending not to care about the business. One Tuesday, a tourist came in, lost and frustrated, and Julian, in hesitant English, walked her to the subway. She sent him a postcard a month later, thanking him for showing her the city’s real side. That was when he realized stories could travel, even if he hadn’t.

   The moment that changed things

   On April 9, 2013, it rained all day in London. Julian was still new, both to the city and to loneliness. He found himself in a basement tea room near Holborn, scribbling observations in a battered notebook. Without thinking, he live-blogged the strange details—an old couple arguing over scones, the barista singing quietly to herself, the odd smell of wet coats and bergamot. By the end of the day, a handful of strangers had commented, sharing their own tea room stories.

   He realized he could connect with people just by paying attention and sharing small truths, even if he was on his own.

   He lost the need to always be surrounded by familiar faces. He gained a way to feel at home in any city—through stories and noticing things others missed.
