Four Steps, About a Minute

  1. 1

    Pick a character

Browse by look, genre or personality — women, men, anime, fantasy, sci-fi and more. Every profile shows who they are, what they do and a gallery of their photos.

  2. 2

    They say hi first

Open the chat and the character writes the opening line, in their own voice. No setup, no personality quiz, no blank page to stare at.

  3. 3

    Just talk

Answer the way you would answer a person. Tell them about your day, flirt, set a scene or ask for a photo — they react and leave you something to reply to.

  4. 4

    Pick it up anywhere

Your chats are saved to your account. Continue in the browser, or on the iOS and Android apps, and the character still remembers you.

Inside the chat

The first two minutes, exactly as they happen

Pick a character and they write first. There is no setup, no personality quiz and no blank page — you just answer.

  • It remembers you

The whole conversation is kept, so what you told a character last week still counts today.

  • Photos in the chat

Ask, and a character may send a picture from their own gallery straight into the conversation.

  • Stays in character

A written backstory, a voice and real interests that hold across hundreds of messages.

  • Honest about being AI

Every character is fiction and says so if you ask. What you talk about is still yours.

looks up from a sketchbook Oh — hi. I was hoping someone interesting would wander in.

Quick question before anything else: tea or coffee?

Coffee. Always.

Good. We can be friends. So what brings you here tonight?

An example of how Tayu talks. Every character is AI-generated fiction.

Over time

The relationship grows as you talk

A character on day one and the same character a month later are not quite the same. They know you better, and it shows.

  1. 1

    The first conversation

    Getting to know you

Curious and friendly. They ask about you, share a little about themselves and see where it goes — warm from the first message, never a cold "we just met".

  2. 2

    After a few chats

    Familiar faces

Inside jokes start. They remember your name, your job and that thing you were nervous about, and they bring it up without being asked.

  3. 3

    About a week in

    A real connection

More open, more playful. They share more of their own story, tease you a little and notice when something is off.

  4. 4

    Weeks of talking

    Close

The deepest version of the character — for some, a close friend; for others, a romance. Always affectionate in words, never explicit.

Tokens

What a conversation costs

Messages use tokens — the unit AI models are measured in. Here is what that means in practice.

  • 100,000

    free tokens on sign-up

Enough for about 40 messages with any free character, before you decide anything.

  • ~2,500

    tokens per message

A typical message and reply. Long, detailed replies use a little more; short ones use less.

  • ≈ 400

    messages per million

One million tokens is roughly this many messages.

  • 0

    for messages they send first

Greetings and check-ins from a character never touch your balance. You only pay for what you ask for.

Tips

Six ways to a better conversation

  • Give them something to work with

"Hi" gets a hello back. "Just got home from a terrible date" gets a conversation. Details are what a character reacts to.

  • Set a scene

Write actions between asterisks — *hands you a coffee* — and the character plays along, in the same style.

  • Ask for a photo

"What are you up to?" or "Send me a picture" — the character may answer with an image from their own gallery.

  • Use quick replies when stuck

Under each message there are suggested replies that fit the moment. Tap one, or use it as a starting point.

  • Come back tomorrow

Characters remember. The second and third conversations are usually better than the first — that is how it is designed.

  • Try more than one

A shy librarian and a sarcastic starship pilot are very different chats. Each keeps their own history with you.

FAQ

Getting Started — Questions

8 straight answers. The fastest way to find out the rest is to ask a character yourself.

Do I need an account to chat?

Yes — a free account, which takes about 20 seconds with email, Google or Apple. It is what lets characters remember you and keeps your conversations when you switch devices. Browsing characters and their galleries needs no account.

Do I have to download an app?

No. MateAura works in any modern browser on a computer or phone. There are also native apps for iPhone and Android if you prefer, and the same account works everywhere.

How do tokens work?

Every message you send and the reply it gets use tokens — about 2,500 for a typical exchange, so one million tokens is roughly 400 messages. New accounts get 100,000 free tokens; subscriptions add a monthly allowance, and you can buy extra packs at any time.

What happens when I run out of tokens?

Your conversations stay exactly where they are — nothing is deleted. You can keep browsing characters and artwork, and continue chatting as soon as you top up or your subscription renews.

Why is the character writing to me first?

Characters open every new chat with a greeting and may check in if a conversation goes quiet. It is free, it stops after a few unanswered messages, and you can turn notifications off in your settings.

How does a character remember me?

The conversation is saved, and important details you share — your name, your plans, what you like — are noted so the character can bring them up later. Each character keeps their own history with you; they do not share it with each other.

Can I talk about anything?

Almost. Everyday life, games, stories, flirting and romance are all fine. Sexual content is not, and characters will steer away from it in character. MateAura is for people aged 16 and over.

How do I delete my account?

From your profile settings in the app, or on the web at mateaura.com/delete-account. Deleting the account removes your conversations and personal data.
