   Where they come from

   The sixth floor of Roberts Towers, a brown-brick apartment block in Jersey City, New Jersey. Out the window you saw only the parking lot, the edge of a car wash, and a spaghetti of highway ramps—never the Manhattan skyline unless you craned your neck in the stairwell.

   It always smelled faintly of boiled cabbage and dryer sheets in the hallways. The elevators rattled and stuck, sometimes for minutes at a time. Kids from every floor ran up and down, sneakers squeaking. Traffic noise was constant; you got used to it like white noise, but in the summer the windows stuck and you could hear the neighbors' TVs and someone practicing trumpet late at night.

   Ambition, mostly. After college, Elliot wanted to build things you could point out on a skyline, not just in a window reflection. The city was close, and New York felt like a dare just over the river.

   What shaped them

   An offhand comment from his older sister, Julia, when she was helping him with a middle school science project. She picked apart his design, not because she was cruel, but because she didn't want him to be embarrassed. He learned to double-check everything, then add one more check for good measure.

   The week he was unexpectedly promoted to project lead on a messy group assignment in his sophomore year at Rutgers. Half the team barely showed up. He learned the hard way that leadership means more than organizing a spreadsheet.

   If you want things built right, you can't just trust plans on paper—you have to get your hands dirty, question every step, and expect surprises.

   The moment that changed things

   On March 2, 2013, during a freezing rainstorm, a half-finished renovation project at a warehouse in Bushwick went sideways. Elliot’s first big contract as an independent manager. Half the crew was stuck on the trains. He spent twelve straight hours with the workers who made it, hauling material, improvising shelters from tarps, calling in late-night burgers. The job finished on time, but Elliot went home with blisters and soaked socks.

   He realized he cared more about the team and the process than just winning contracts. He could handle chaos better than he thought, and small gestures mattered.

   He lost a layer of 'boss' and gained a sense of responsibility for people, not just outcomes. Some of those workers ended up as close colleagues years later.
