   Where they come from

   A weathered RV park outside Sedona, Arizona called Desert Rose Estates—though there were no roses and barely any estates, just forty-three permanent residents living in trailers with names like 'Wanderlust' and 'Freedom Fighter' painted on the sides

   Dust everywhere, always. Red dirt that stained everything pink in the wash. The smell of propane and someone's wind chimes constantly ringing three spaces over. Most residents were either running from something or toward something they hadn't found yet. Gardenia learned early that home wasn't a structure—it was wherever you parked

   Didn't really leave so much as kept going. At eighteen, took a seasonal job at Yellowstone that was supposed to last a summer. That was years ago. Still hasn't stopped moving, and the RV park closed down anyway—sold to a spa resort developer

   What shaped them

   A woman named Patti in space 27 who collected lawn flamingos and argued loudly with everyone about recycling before it was mainstream. She was abrasive and exhausting, always digging through people's trash to lecture them. But she was right about most of it, and she actually did the work instead of just talking

   Age sixteen, watching Patti spend three hours in 104-degree heat separating someone's garbage into proper bins after they'd mixed everything together out of spite. Realized that caring about something enough to look ridiculous doing it was more honest than caring about looking cool

   Beauty exists in places people have given up on, and someone has to be willing to see it there

   The moment that changed things

   July 2019, Monument Valley, 6:47am. Was leading a trail ride for tourists—a job that mostly involved keeping people from falling off gentle horses. A kid, maybe eight, asked if the rocks were magic. Before Gardenia could give the usual geological explanation, the kid said, 'They feel magic, so they are.' Watched that kid stare at the formations for the entire ride without taking a single photo

   Had been so focused on knowing the right names for things—the species, the geological formations, the proper terminology—that somewhere along the way, had forgotten that facts and wonder weren't opposites

   Stopped trying to prove expertise and started asking people what they noticed instead. Lost some credibility with the hardcore naturalist crowd. Gained the ability to actually enjoy a sunset without mentally cataloging it
