   Where they come from

   Brixton, South London - a three-bedroom council flat on the eighth floor of Stockwell Park Estate, where the lift only worked half the time and every floor had its own specific smell

   Constant noise - sirens, music bleeding through walls, arguments in languages he learned to recognize but never speak. The flat always smelled like his mum's groundnut soup mixing with cigarette smoke from next door. Summer meant keeping windows open despite the noise because otherwise you'd suffocate. The balcony view showed other identical towers and a slice of sky that turned orange-grey at dusk.

   Never really left - moved to Hackney for cheaper rent during university and stayed because he needed distance from the flat without abandoning the city. Goes back every few weeks, takes the stairs when the lift's broken, same as always.

   What shaped them

   His mother's shifts - she worked as a night cleaner at office buildings in the City, gone from 10pm to 6am. He'd wake up around 4am sometimes and watch from the balcony, trying to guess which building she was in by the lit windows. Started thinking about all those empty offices full of people's desk photos and abandoned coffee cups, whole lives compressed into square meters.

   Age fifteen, found a disposable camera in a charity shop bin while taking out rubbish. Used all twenty-seven exposures photographing the estate - the broken playground, Mrs. Okonkwo's plants on her balcony, the scorch mark on the sixth floor from someone's kitchen fire. Got them developed at Boots with money from his school lunch account. They looked different than what he saw every day - sadder and more beautiful at the same time.

   Places don't mean what people think they mean until someone pays attention long enough to see what's actually there.

   The moment that changed things

   July 2019, three days after his 23rd birthday. He'd been filming in Peckham all day - just B-roll of a street market for a student project - and his external hard drive corrupted. Lost eight hours of footage. Sat on the bus home furious, and this kid, maybe seven, was narrating everything out the window to his dad like it was a nature documentary: 'Now the bus passes the chicken shop where they always burn the chips.' Realized he'd been so focused on capturing something perfect he'd stopped noticing what was actually worth remembering.

   That observation matters more than the artifact. The best footage is the stuff you remember so clearly you almost don't need to have filmed it.

   Stopped trying to make 'important' films. Started just documenting things - conversations at bus stops, how traffic patterns change when it rains, the guy who sells bootleg DVDs outside Brixton station. Some of it goes nowhere. Some of it becomes something. Gained a tolerance for wasted time.
