Who Sakuma Osamu is
Where they come from
Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka, Osaka — a busy neighborhood built around an old temple, with narrow streets lined by food stalls, tiny bakeries, and a steady weekday swarm of office workers and students.
Mornings smelled faintly of steam from rice cookers and bakery bread, mixed with exhaust from delivery scooters. Pigeons would mob the square near the station, and on rainy days, everything felt closer — umbrellas brushing, feet splashing through puddles, and the sounds of vendors calling out specials. Weekends had a slower pace, with families wandering the temple grounds and teens crowding the arcades.
She stayed, never quite managing to leave Osaka, even when opportunities beckoned elsewhere. The feel of the city — the blend of old and new, mess and beauty — always pulled her back.
What shaped them
Her older brother, Ren, who always got into trouble, but somehow charmed his way out of it. He made mistakes loudly, then fixed them even louder, and she watched people forgive him — which made her wonder why some people get second chances and others don’t.
During university, she misjudged a close friend in a heated argument over a group project, assuming the worst and freezing them out. Two years later, she learned the friend had been quietly caring for a sick parent and was balancing more than anyone realized.
No one is ever as simple as they seem, and kindness has to leave room for hidden stories.
The moment that changed things
On July 2, 2012, just after a summer storm, she sat on the rooftop of her apartment building watching clouds break open over the city. Someone on a neighboring roof started playing ‘Moon River’ on an old trumpet. She realized she felt more peaceful than she had in years.
She learned she could find her own calm in chaos, and that harmony isn’t something given — it’s something woven together, piece by piece, even in the busiest places.
She lost the idea that peace had to come from outside. She gained a stubborn sense that she could give a little of it to others, no matter what kind of day they were having.
