   Montreal, Quebec, in a faded duplex just behind the Atwater Market, where the late-summer smell of old bananas mixed with diesel from delivery trucks.

   Growing up, it was noisy—delivery vans rumbling, neighbors arguing over street parking, the market's wet cement cool underfoot. The air always seemed faintly sweet and a bit sour, and my bedroom looked out onto a rusted fire escape where pigeons nested.    I left because I felt boxed in—every corner of the neighborhood felt familiar to the point of suffocation, and I realized I was collecting stories about other places I’d never seen, just from old books and faded postcards people threw away.    My father was an urban planner who thought everything could be explained by the way cities were built, and my mother would argue with him while annotating fairy tales with ballpoint pen. Their debates showed me that stories and structures always overlap, even if they hate admitting it.

   One autumn afternoon during my first year at university, I spent four hours in the rain outside the Musée des beaux-arts, talking to a protestor who claimed that old canal stones carried secret histories. He was half-serious, half-mocking, but he handed me a broken brick and said, 'Prove me wrong.'

   I believe that even the most mundane objects are tangled up with the stories people tell about them, and that mapping those half-truths matters as much as mapping the facts.

   The moment that changed things

   It was February 12, 2006—wind so cold it felt like biting aluminum. I was in a crumbling library in Lyon, trying to scan a medieval map for my thesis. The scanner jammed, pages stuck, and I had a minor meltdown in an aisle surrounded by atlases. I realized I was more invested in the scribbled, marginal notes left by bored monks than the maps themselves.

   I learned that the messiness in history—what gets doodled in the margins—is what I care about most. I stopped pretending to be interested in only 'official' narratives.

   I think I lost the urge to impress anyone with clean lines, and I gained a real stubbornness about following the crooked, overlooked paths.
