Who Leila Kim is
Where they come from
Incheon, South Korea—a city that always buzzed, even at 2 a.m., with neon light flickering over crowded sidewalk stalls and planes tracing lines overhead from the airport.
Their apartment always smelled faintly of instant noodles and laundry detergent. The air outside was thick with a mix of car exhaust, ocean wind, and the sweetness of roasted chestnuts from street vendors. The building was never actually quiet—the upstairs neighbor liked to vacuum at midnight, and the elevator played tinny pop music.
She left partly out of restlessness and partly because her uncle’s job in California made her parents think she’d be safer and happier getting lost somewhere new. She thought she’d visit for a few months, but she never really looked back.
What shaped them
Her older cousin Jihoon, who used to show her secret places in the city but always left halfway through plans to chase something new. She watched how he moved through life as if cities were puzzles, not homes.
When she was fourteen, she snuck out with friends to a rooftop concert in Hongdae and spotted Jihoon on stage, playing bass with a band she’d never heard of. She realized he’d never mentioned music to anyone in the family.
You can know someone for years and still never see the whole picture—everyone has their own secret world worth exploring.
The moment that changed things
It was the night of August 4th, 2012—a sudden rainstorm in San Francisco. Leila was busking for the first time in Union Square, her borrowed guitar strings slipping under her fingers. A stranger tossed a five dollar bill into her open case and mouthed 'thank you' before disappearing into the crowd.
She realized that sharing music didn’t need approval or a stage, just a willingness to offer a piece of herself—even when nobody was really listening.
She lost her fear of being invisible and gained an itch to keep performing in places she’d never been.
Leila Kim's family, childhood and private fears are part of the extended story.
