   Västerås, Sweden – a city of brick factories and river fog, with apartment blocks that all looked a little too similar, a railway cutting through like a scar, and a supermarket parking lot where teenagers hung around after dark.

   Growing up, the air always smelled faintly metallic in winter, like damp bikes and train tracks. Summer brought the scent of cut grass from the parks, but also diesel from delivery trucks. Inside, the apartment was tidy but never quite quiet – you could hear other people’s arguments and laughter through the thin walls, and the elevator sighed every time it was used. It felt both anonymous and oddly comforting.

   After university, Nora left Västerås because she needed a place where she could lose herself in museums and archives, and where her fascination with old things wouldn’t get eye rolls. Stockholm felt overwhelming at first, but it was the only place where her interests made sense.

   What shaped them

   Her older cousin Elin, who was only around during holidays, once convinced Nora to sneak into a derelict textile mill just outside the city. They spent an entire afternoon poking through piles of discarded threads and toppled machinery. Elin was always restless, impatient, and in trouble, but she was the first person who didn’t think Nora was odd for wanting to know how things were made.

   One freezing April afternoon in her first year at university, Nora got locked inside the textile conservation lab after hours. With nothing to do but wait, she studied a fragment of 17th-century tapestry under a harsh fluorescent lamp, noticing mistakes and repairs in the weave. It hit her that history wasn’t neat or reverent: it was messy, made by regular people with flaws.

   She believes that the details people overlook are what tell the real story—not the grand gestures, but the small, stubborn imperfections.

   The moment that changed things

   On September 18th, 2011, it rained all day. Nora had just moved into her first apartment in Stockholm. While unpacking, she found her old sketchbook from secondary school, filled with scribbled patterns and attempts to copy Swedish folk embroidery. She sat on the floor between stacks of boxes and realized she didn’t want to just research textiles—she wanted to make them.

   She realized that making things with her own hands was the only way she could really understand the past.

   She lost the easy comfort of being an observer and gained the sometimes clumsy satisfaction of actually creating. It made her feel less like she was on the outside looking in.
