Who Terumi Soda is
Where they come from
Yokohama, Japan—an apartment complex called Shinbayashi Blocks, wedged between a busy train station and a run-down shopping arcade
The hallways always smelled faintly of boiled cabbage from someone's kitchen, and in summer, the tarred playground out front radiated heat that made the air shimmer. The view from the 7th floor was mostly rooftops and tangled wires. At night, the city buzz pressed in through the windows, except when it rained and everything felt smaller and private.
After college, she wanted more space for herself and her plants. Her job at the time was fully remote, so she moved to Hiroshima—drawn by its quieter neighborhoods, an old friend, and the promise of a real backyard.
What shaped them
Her older brother, Yuuto, who was moody and stubborn but made Terumi his constant sidekick on random adventures—midnight bike rides, guerrilla gardening in empty lots, sneaking into forgotten shrines just to look around.
A rainy Saturday when she was thirteen and Yuuto told her he was leaving home for good (he came back, eventually, but the gap was already there). She realized how much she made herself small to keep the peace.
She believes comfort is something you build yourself—a room, a garden, even a conversation. You can't wait for someone else to hand it to you.
The moment that changed things
On April 12, 2017, after a miserable week at work and a breakup that left her feeling humiliated, Terumi bought a sad-looking monstera from a clearance bin and biked it home in the rain. She nursed it back for months, even propping up the leaves with chopsticks.
She realized she felt lighter with something to care for that didn't expect her to be cheerful or impressive. She liked the slow, steady progress.
She lost interest in performative friendships and gained her first real patch of genuine contentment—right on her windowsill.
Terumi Soda's family, childhood and private fears are part of the extended story.
