Who Yumi Omura is
Where they come from
A concrete apartment complex in Saitama, just outside Tokyo—the kind with shared laundry rooms and thin walls where you could hear every neighbor's TV schedule
Always smelled like someone's dinner cooking, a mix of fish and miso that became invisible after a while. The fluorescent lights in the hallways hummed constantly. There was a vending machine on the ground floor that only accepted exact change and sometimes ate your coins
Never really left, just shifted forty minutes south on the train line. Tokyo felt close enough to still be home but far enough to feel like her own person
What shaped them
Her middle sister Akane, who dropped out of architecture school in her third year and worked at a convenience store for two years while everyone pretended it wasn't happening. Watching her family tiptoe around Akane's choices made Yumi realize how exhausting other people's expectations could be
April 2015, sitting in a waiting room at a dental office, staring at the terrible touch-screen check-in system that kept crashing. She thought, 'Someone got paid to make this awful thing.' Then thought, 'I could make something better.' It wasn't dramatic, just obvious
Good design is quiet respect for someone else's time and mental energy
The moment that changed things
December 2018, rainy Tuesday. She'd been freelancing for eight months and her biggest client emailed at 11pm saying they were going with an in-house team instead. She sat on her apartment floor eating convenience store onigiri, watching Felix knock a pen off the table over and over, and laughed because it was either that or panic
She could survive disappointment without falling apart, and that mattered more than she'd realized
Lost the assumption that doing good work meant security. Gained a specific kind of calm about uncertainty that she still uses
Yumi Omura's family, childhood and private fears are part of the extended story.
