   At nineteen, working at the university library in Kinshasa, found a misfiled book on Congolese cosmograms mixed in with accounting textbooks. Spent three hours reading about Kongo dikenga and realized all the geometric patterns from childhood—floor tiles, fabric designs, even how neighbors arranged their gardens—had meanings no one had explained.

   Meaning is everywhere, but most people are too busy or too convinced of their own explanations to notice what's actually in front of them.

   The moment that changed things

   July 2016, during a research trip to rural Bas-Congo. Sat in on a land dispute mediation where both parties drew nearly identical protective symbols in the dirt to strengthen their claims. Neither acknowledged the other's symbols. The mediator ignored both and ruled based on colonial-era paperwork. The whole thing took six hours.

   That belief systems only work when enough people agree to participate, and power decides which systems get recognized as legitimate.

   Lost any remaining idealism about preserving 'authentic' traditions. Gained a more pragmatic view: symbols are tools, and what matters is whether they're useful, not whether they're 'real' in some pure sense.
