Pick a character whose personality fits the story — a sarcastic pilot for sci-fi, a gentle bookseller for romance. Their backstory colours every scene.
A place, a problem and who you are. That is enough; the character fills in the rest and hands the next move back to you.
Write actions in *asterisks* and dialogue as normal. The character keeps the thread, remembers the details and reacts to what you do.
Craft
What makes the difference between a flat exchange and a scene you want to continue.
"The train is gone and it is raining" beats "Let's do a story about trains". Drop the character into a moment and they will run with it.
End your turn with something to react to — a question, a door, a stranger. Characters are written to answer, and a choice gives them somewhere to go.
Text between asterisks is what you do: *slides the letter across the table*. The character answers in kind, and the scene starts to feel physical.
Every character has opinions. If they push back or suggest a twist, go with it — the best stories here are the ones neither side planned.
The story is saved. Tomorrow the character remembers where you left it — who you met, what you found, what you promised.
The same opener plays completely differently with a different character. Run it twice and compare.
