If you've played Episode or Choices for a while, you know the loop. A great chapter ends on a cliffhanger, the romantic option costs diamonds, and your passes or keys are empty until tomorrow. Plenty of people love the format and still want something different: fewer paywalls, better writing, or endings that actually differ.
Here are the apps people move to, what each does best and how each one charges, plus a newer kind of interactive story where the characters stay around after the episode ends. (Full disclosure: we make MateAura, so we've tried to be fair to everyone else and clear about what we can't do.)
What people want from an Episode alternative
Reviews and forums tend to come back to the same five wishes:
- Choices that matter. Not "pick a hairstyle," but decisions that change where the story goes.
- A fair price. Being able to finish a story without paying for every romantic option.
- Good writing. Characters with real motives, and plot that isn't padding between premium scenes.
- Less waiting. Reading at your own pace rather than a ticket timer's.
- More romance, done well. Slow burn, tension, payoff.
No app nails all five. Here is how the main ones compare.
The apps, compared
Choices: Stories You Play
From Pixelberry. Polished, professionally written series across romance, fantasy and mystery, with recurring fan-favourite books. Chapters use keys that refill over time, and premium choices and outfits cost diamonds. It's the closest thing to Episode with a single, consistent house style.
Best for: readers who want professional writing and long-running series.
Chapters: Interactive Stories
From Crazy Maple Studio. A large library that leans heavily romance, including many adaptations of popular romance novels. Tickets gate chapters and diamonds unlock premium scenes and choices.
Best for: romance novel fans who want lots of titles.
Romance Club
Romance stories in several genres (fantasy, vampire, drama) with distinctive art. It uses a premium currency for choices, like the others.
Best for: readers who like darker or fantasy romance and stylised art.
Lovestruck: Choose Your Romance
From Voltage, a studio known for otome games. Stories are chaptered romances with multiple love interests, a format close to otome. Premium content uses its own currency and passes.
Best for: otome-style romance with several love interests. (See also our otome games guide.)
Episode itself
Worth saying: Episode's strength is its enormous user-created library, with stories for every taste, written by fans. Quality varies as much as you'd expect. Passes gate chapters and gems unlock premium choices.
Best for: variety and niche tropes no studio would make.
MateAura interactive stories
Something a little different: fully voiced, illustrated stories you play in your browser, whose characters are AI personas you can chat with after an episode.
- Endings that really diverge. Each story asks one dramatic question, and each ending answers it differently. The decision at the climax decides which ending you get. A story where every option leads to the same place can't be published.
- No ticket timer. Read the episodes that are out at your own pace. The first episode needs no account.
- Paid options only add. Some choices offer an extra option for tokens. It is always guaranteed, never random, and never worse than the free choice next to it. Every story can be read to an ending for free.
- Talk to the characters. After the episode, open a chat with the character and talk about what happened. They know your path and nothing you haven't reached yet.
The honest trade-off: our library is small. We release a few carefully made stories one episode at a time, not hundreds of books. If you want a new book every day, keep your story app. If you want one great story whose ending is really yours, and a character who'll talk to you about it, start here.

Our first story: Under Her Name
A romantic comedy-drama set in a freezing January in Soho. You're a broke ex-design student, three days from eviction, when stylist Toya Clark drags you off the sidewalk to fake-model a fitting for a buyer from a French fashion house. You're bad at modelling and worse at coffee, but you fix her jacket without thinking, and suddenly everyone is asking whose hands really made the collection.
It's fully voiced, has five endings, and the flirting starts in the first fitting. After episode one you can open a chat with Toya. She knows what happened on your path, and nothing you haven't reached.
How to choose
- Want lots of books every day? Episode or Chapters.
- Want polished studio writing? Choices.
- Want several love interests per story? Lovestruck or an otome game.
- Want voice, real endings and characters who talk back? MateAura.
Many readers use two: a big library for the daily habit, and one deeper story for the evening.
A note on safety
MateAura is for ages 16 and over. Stories have romance, drama and tension with flirting and kisses, and no explicit content. Characters who read as under 18 are never in a romance. Your progress and chats are private, and you can delete them anytime.
Why the endings differ here
A lot of chaptered story apps have the same problem: writing every branch is expensive, so most choices fold back into the same path a scene later. Readers notice. "My choices don't matter" is one of the most common complaints in story-app reviews.
We built the opposite constraint into our tools. Every MateAura story starts from a dramatic question with at least three genuinely different answers, and each ending is one of those answers. The choice at the climax must decide which ending you get. If every option at the climax leads into the same scene and the story merely sorts readers by their hidden scores, our validator flags it as an error and the story can't be published. Hidden meters still matter: they shade how a scene plays and can open or close a door. But they never quietly override the decision you just made.
That's also why paid options can't make things worse. A paid choice that would leave you worse off than the free one next to it is flagged too. Paying adds, it never trades.
Reading on the web vs in an app
Most story apps are mobile-only. MateAura stories run in any browser, so you can read on a laptop at lunch and on your phone in bed, with your place kept across both once you have a free account. You can also chat with the characters in our iPhone and Android apps.
In short
Choices, Chapters, Romance Club and Lovestruck are the closest alternatives to Episode, each with its own currency and strengths. If you're after something different, with voice, endings that really diverge and characters you can talk to after the episode, try MateAura's stories free in your browser.
