The radio crackles with a voice that sounds exactly like mine. Did you hear that?
goes very still, hand hovering over the dial …I heard it. It said your name. And then it said mine.
Turn it off. Please.
the switch clicks — and the voice keeps talking Okay. That’s… not great. Stay behind me.
A good roleplay doesn't need a long setup — it needs a strong first line. Give an AI character a situation with tension in it, and they'll take it somewhere you didn't expect.
Below are roleplay ideas by genre, each written as an opening line you can use as-is. Tap any of them to drop it into the chat box on this page, pick a character, and the scene starts. Lines in asterisks are actions; the rest is what you say.
How to use these prompts
Pick a character who fits — or deliberately doesn't. A fantasy character in a fantasy tavern is classic; a London music producer in a haunted manor is often funnier. Browse fantasy, sci-fi, horror and anime characters.
Let them answer before you push the plot. The best scenes come from reacting to what the character does.
Raise the stakes slowly. Mystery and tension last longer when they unfold over several turns.
Steer inside the story. MateAura characters always stay in character — to change direction, make something happen ("Suddenly the door bursts open…").
Fantasy
Romance (PG-13)
Romance is welcome on MateAura — flirting, dates, a first kiss in words — and it stays PG-13.

Building a longer campaign
Some roleplays last one evening; others become stories you come back to for weeks. A few habits make a long campaign work:
Give the world a few fixed points. A city, a rival, an unanswered question. Mention them now and then so they stay alive.
Let the character have goals of their own. Ask what they want out of the adventure — the best partners pull the story in their own direction.
Use chapters. End a session on a turning point and open the next one with "Previously…" in a line or two. It keeps both of you on the same page.
Change the pace. After a big fight or reveal, play a quiet scene — a campfire, a shared meal. Those are often the moments people remember.
Bring back the past. A promise from the first night, an enemy who escaped, a gift that turns out to matter. Characters keep a running memory of what matters, and callbacks are what make a story feel like it was going somewhere all along.
Making a roleplay last
End your turn on a hook. A question, a noise, a choice — something they have to react to.
Give the character room to surprise you. Ask "what do you do?" instead of deciding for them.
Keep track of the important things. Characters keep a running memory of what matters, but mentioning a key object or promise when it returns makes the payoff land.
Stop on a cliffhanger. It makes picking it up tomorrow easy — and in the mobile apps, the character may check in to see if you're coming back.
Want something structured? Our voiced interactive stories give you choices with real consequences, and you can talk to the characters afterwards.
What's allowed
MateAura is 16+ and human-moderated. Adventure, mystery, horror and romance are all welcome; nothing sexual or explicit, and never romance with characters who read as under 18 or in family roles. A scene that heads there is redirected in character and the story carries on. More on how roleplay works in our AI roleplay chat guide.
Characters ready to play a part
Each one has a backstory, a job, a home town and a gallery. Open a profile, or just say hi.
7 straight answers. The fastest way to find out the rest is to ask a character yourself.
How do I start a roleplay with an AI?
Write one or two lines that set a situation with some tension — where you are, what just happened — and give the character something to react to. Use *asterisks* for actions and normal text for speech. The character steps into the scene and moves it forward.
What are good roleplay ideas for beginners?
Start with simple, familiar situations: a stranger at a rainy café, a stranded train, a mysterious letter, moving day with a friend. They need no worldbuilding and give the character plenty to respond to.
Can I roleplay romance with an AI?
On MateAura, yes — flirting, dates and a first kiss in words, kept PG-13. Nothing sexual or explicit, and never with characters who read as under 18 or in family roles.
Can I change the story halfway through?
Yes, from inside the story: make something happen (“Suddenly the door bursts open…”). MateAura characters stay in character, so there is no out-of-character mode — steering in the fiction works better anyway.
Does the AI remember the roleplay later?
Characters keep a running memory of the important things — names, promises, key moments — so you can continue another day. Mention a key detail again when it returns to make the payoff land.
Can I roleplay in another language?
Yes. Characters answer in the language of your latest message, so any of these prompts work translated into your language.
Is AI roleplay free?
On MateAura it is free to start: the first reply comes before sign-up, and a free account includes tokens for a long session. Most characters are free to roleplay with.
