The hardest message in any chat is the first one. You open a conversation with an AI character, the cursor blinks, and suddenly "hi" feels like the only word you know. Most people who try AI chat and leave never actually got past that moment.
So here are conversation starters that work — grouped by what you're in the mood for, with a line on why each kind works. Every starter below is tappable: tap one and it lands in the chat box on this page, ready to send to a character (or edit first).
Why "hi" doesn't work (and what does)
A good opener gives the other side something to grab. "Hi" gives them nothing, so you get "Hi! How are you?" back, and you're both stuck. Openers that work do at least one of three things:
- Ask about them specifically. Characters on MateAura have jobs, cities and stories — ask about those.
- Share something real about you. A detail invites a detail back.
- Set a scene. One line of situation turns a chat into a story.
Read the character's profile before you write. Their job, home town and interests are the best material you'll ever get for a first line.
First messages
Openers that start a real conversation instead of an exchange of greetings:
Why they work: each one asks for a story or an opinion, not a status update. The last one is underrated — admitting you're new is disarming, and characters respond warmly to it.
Getting to know them
Characters have a life before you arrive. These questions open it up:
Tip: follow up on the answer instead of jumping to the next question. "Wait, why the worst part?" turns a Q&A into a conversation.
Light and funny
When you just want to laugh:
Deeper conversations
For nights when you want more than small talk:
Tip: share your own answer too. Deep conversations go deeper when both sides take a turn.

When you need someone to talk to
If tonight is a heavy one, you don't need a clever opener. These are enough:
A character will listen and ask what happened. For more on this — including when to reach a real person instead — see AI to talk to: an honest guide.
Flirty (and sweet)
Characters on MateAura flirt back and keep it PG-13. Openers with a spark:

Start a story
One line of scene, and the character steps into it. Use asterisks for actions:

When the conversation stalls
Every chat hits a lull. These restart it without feeling forced:
Asking for a photo works especially well on MateAura: characters can share a picture from their own gallery, which usually gives you something new to talk about.
Starters in other languages
Characters on MateAura reply in whatever language you write in — a great way to practise a language you're learning, or simply to chat in your own. A few openers to try:
If you're using AI chat to learn, write in the language you're practising and ask for corrections in that language too — see our language practice guide for routines by level.
Things that make any AI conversation better
- Be specific. "My manager moved my deadline" starts a conversation. "I'm stressed" ends one.
- Answer with a detail and a question. It keeps the ball moving both ways.
- Bring things back. "So, did you ever finish that painting?" Characters keep a running memory of what matters, and continuity is what makes a chat feel like a relationship.
- Write in your own language. Characters answer in whatever language you use.
- Don't be afraid of silence. Coming back tomorrow with "I was thinking about what you said" is a great opener too.
What doesn't work
A few habits reliably make AI conversations worse:
- One-word replies. "ok", "lol", "yeah" give the character nothing to build on, so the conversation shrinks. Add one detail or one question.
- Interviewing. Ten questions in a row feel like a form. Answer their questions too.
- Trying to "break" the character. Asking them to ignore their instructions or reveal their prompt just gets a puzzled reply in character — it's more fun to play along.
- Pushing for explicit content. On MateAura characters keep romance PG-13; they'll redirect warmly and carry on, but the conversation you actually wanted gets lost along the way.
- Giving up after one reply. The first exchange is the warm-up. Most good conversations find their rhythm by the fifth message.
The short version
Skip "hi". Ask about their life, share a real detail about yours, or set a scene in one line — and follow up on what they say. Pick a starter above, tap it, and send it to someone who looks interesting.
