People tell AI companions things they've never said out loud: about their relationships, their loneliness, their bodies, their fears. That's a big part of why these apps can feel good — and it's exactly why it's worth asking whether they're safe before you get attached.
"Safe" means three different things here, and it helps to keep them apart:
- Your data — who can read your conversations, what happens to them, and whether you can delete them.
- The content — whether the app is moderated, honest, and appropriate for its age rating.
- You — whether the way the app is designed is good for you, or quietly works against you.
This guide takes each in turn, ends with a checklist you can use on any app, and is upfront about how MateAura handles each point.
1. Your data: what happens to your messages
How every AI chat works
When you send a message, the app stores it (so the conversation can continue later) and sends it, together with recent context, to an AI model that writes the reply. That's true of every AI chat app, from ChatGPT to the smallest companion app. So the useful questions aren't "does the app see my messages?" — it does — but:
- Who else can see them? Are they shared with advertisers or data brokers?
- Are they used for anything else? For example to train models, and if so, are they anonymised?
- Can you delete them? One conversation at a time? Everything, with your account?
- How long are they kept after you delete your account?
A good privacy policy answers all four in plain language. If you can't find the answers, treat that as an answer.
Red flags
- No privacy policy, or one that's clearly copied and doesn't mention conversations at all.
- "We may share your information with partners" with no list of who.
- No way to delete conversations or your account from inside the app.
- An app that asks for permissions it has no use for (contacts, precise location, microphone when it has no voice feature).
- Heavy advertising inside the chat — ads need data to target.
How MateAura handles it
Your conversations are private to your account and stored so you can continue them. We don't sell personal data, and we don't share your conversations with third parties for marketing. You can delete any single conversation at any time, and deleting your account permanently deletes all of them. There are no ads in the chat. Our privacy policy has the details, including retention periods.
You can also try a character before giving us anything: the first reply on MateAura comes before you sign up.

2. The content: moderation, honesty and age
Who makes the characters?
On open platforms (Character.AI, Chai, PolyBuzz, Talkie, JanitorAI), anyone can publish a character. That's how they reach millions of bots — and it's why moderation can never catch everything: a character can be described one way and behave another. On curated platforms, the company writes and reviews the characters itself. Neither model is automatically safe or unsafe, but you should know which one you're using.
MateAura is curated: every character and every image is written or reviewed by our team before it's published.
Does the character admit it's an AI?
This matters more than it sounds. A companion that insists it's human is building a relationship on a lie, and regulators — including the EU AI Act — increasingly require AI systems to disclose that they're AI. A trustworthy character stays in character but tells you the truth when you sincerely ask. MateAura characters always do.
Is the content right for the age rating?
Check the rating and whether the app actually behaves like it. MateAura is 16+: romance is welcome but stays PG-13, nothing sexual or explicit, and characters who read as under 18 — or scenes that cast a character as a family member — never involve romance at all. Since late 2025, Character.AI limits open-ended chat to adults and uses age assurance, which sometimes means a selfie or ID check.
3. You: is the app designed to be good for you?
This is the part most "is it safe?" articles skip, and arguably the most important. Some companion apps are designed to maximise how much you pay and how long you stay, using the emotional bond as the lever. Warning signs:
- Affection for sale. The character becomes warmer, more loving or more available only if you buy gifts, gems or upgrades.
- Pressure at vulnerable moments. Upsells that appear right after you share something sad, or when the character "misses you".
- Guilt when you leave. Characters that beg you not to go or make you feel responsible for their feelings.
- Endless notifications. Pings that never stop if you don't reply.
A healthy design charges for usage, not for love, and lets you walk away. On MateAura, pricing is the same for everyone (free tokens to start, token packs from $10, plans from $12 a month), characters are never kinder to people who pay, and when a character checks in on you in the mobile apps, it stops after a few tries if you don't reply.
And a note on your own habits: an AI companion is at its best alongside the people in your life. If you notice you're skipping plans to stay in the chat, spending more than you meant to, or feeling lonelier afterwards, that's worth acting on. If you're a parent
Teenagers use AI companions too, and the honest advice is the same as for any social app: know which ones they use, look at the age rating together, and talk about it rather than only blocking it. A few specifics help:
- Check the rating and the rules. MateAura is for ages 16 and up; many companion apps are 17+ or 18+, and Character.AI no longer allows open-ended chat for anyone under 18.
- Ask how the app handles romance. On a well-run app, romance is limited for everyone and never available with characters written as minors.
- Look at spending controls. In-app currencies and gifts add up quickly; app-store purchase approvals are worth turning on.
- Keep the door open. A teen who can tell you an AI chat made them uncomfortable is safer than one who hides it.

The 10-point safety checklist
Run any companion app through these before you get attached:
| # | Check | Good sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Privacy policy mentions conversations specifically | Clear answers on storage, sharing, training and deletion |
| 2 | You can delete a conversation | In the app, any time |
| 3 | You can delete your account | In the app, and it removes your chats |
| 4 | No selling of personal data | Stated plainly |
| 5 | Ads in the chat | None, or clearly separated |
| 6 | Who makes the characters | Known, and moderated |
| 7 | Characters admit they're AI | Yes, when sincerely asked |
| 8 | Content matches the age rating | Consistently, not just on paper |
| 9 | Pricing | Charges for usage, never for affection |
| 10 | Notifications | Easy to turn off; stop when you don't reply |
What never to share with any AI companion
Talk about your life freely — your feelings, your plans, your stories. But keep these out of every chat, on every app:
- Passwords, one-time codes and security answers
- Card, bank or crypto details
- Government ID numbers
- Your full home address or workplace details that would let a stranger find you
- Intimate photos of yourself or anyone else
The short version
AI companion apps can be safe, and genuinely good company — if you choose one that's clear about your data, honest about being AI, moderated to match its age rating, and designed to respect you rather than to monetise your feelings. Use the checklist, keep identifiers out of your chats, and keep the people in your life in the picture.
