You're mid-conversation, you hit send, and nothing happens. Or you get "Something went wrong," or the reply spins forever. Before you clear your cache, reinstall the app or restart your router, take 30 seconds to find out whether Character.AI is down for everyone or just for you.
We're not affiliated with Character.AI and can't see its servers. This guide collects the checks and fixes that work, plus somewhere to keep chatting while you wait.
Step 1: Is it down for everyone? (30 seconds)
Check these, in this order:
- The official status page:
status.character.ai. If there's an open incident ("Investigating", "Degraded performance"), it's on their side. Nothing you do on your device will fix it. - An outage tracker: Downdetector or StatusGator. A spike of reports in the last hour means it's widespread, even if the official page hasn't caught up yet. Trackers often notice before the status page does.
- Social media: search "character ai down" on X or Reddit and sort by latest. If dozens of people are posting the same thing in the last few minutes, you have your answer.
If it's down for everyone: wait. Big outages usually last minutes to a few hours. Don't spam refresh or reinstall; it won't help, and a reinstall can log you out at a bad moment. Skip ahead to what to do while you wait.
If everything looks normal: the problem is probably on your side. Keep reading.
Step 2: Common errors and what they mean
| What you see | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| "Something went wrong" / "Error sending message" | Request failed: server load, expired session, network blip | Refresh; log out and back in |
| Reply spins forever | Servers overloaded or the connection dropped | Wait a minute, then resend |
| "Unable to connect" / blank page | Network, DNS, VPN or an extension blocking it | Turn off VPN/ad-blocker, try mobile data |
| Waiting room / queue | Peak demand; the site is rationing access | Wait it out or try off-peak |
| App crashes on open | Outdated app or corrupted cache | Update the app; clear cache |
| Chats missing | Usually a display/sync issue, not deletion | Check on another device or the web |
Step 3: Fixes that work (when it's just you)
Work down this list. Most problems are fixed by step three.
- Refresh or restart the app. Fully close it (swipe it away), then reopen it.
- Log out and back in. Expired sessions cause a lot of "something went wrong" errors.
- Switch between app and web. If the app fails, try the website in a browser, or the other way round. That tells you whether the problem is the app or your account.
- Turn off VPNs, ad-blockers and privacy extensions. They can block the requests a chat needs, especially streaming replies.
- Change networks. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the reverse. School and office networks sometimes block AI chat sites.
- Clear cache. In a browser, clear site data for character.ai. On Android, clear the app's cache in settings. On iPhone, offload or reinstall the app as a last resort.
- Update everything. The app, your browser, your phone's OS.
- Try later. Evenings in the US and Europe and the hours after a new feature launch are peak load. If the status page is green but replies crawl, it's probably load.
Before you refresh, copy any long message you were writing. A failed send sometimes clears the box.
Why AI chat services go down
AI chat is expensive to run. Every reply needs serious computing power, and millions of people chatting at the same hour means millions of replies at once. When demand spikes faster than capacity, services slow down, queue users or fail. Outages also happen during updates, new model launches or infrastructure changes. It's normal for any large AI service, which is why it pays to know how to check.

What to do while you wait
If your favourite service is down, you don't have to lose the evening. A few ideas:
- Write the next scene yourself. Jot down where your roleplay was heading. You'll pick it up faster when it's back, and you may find you have better ideas.
- Try another character app for a bit. MateAura has 100+ characters with their own jobs, cities and stories. You can send a first message and get a reply before signing up, so it costs you nothing to try while you wait.
- Read an interactive story. Our voiced interactive stories play in your browser with no account for the first episode.
If you were in the middle of a roleplay, you can carry the scene over. Tap a line to drop it into the chat on this page:
Is MateAura a good backup?
Honestly, it depends on what you use Character.AI for.
- If you love one specific character you or the community built there, nothing elsewhere will be that character. MateAura doesn't let users create characters. Every character is ours, with a full profile, a gallery and a consistent personality.
- If you want warm conversation, romance or story, you'll likely feel at home. Characters remember what matters about you, flirt back within a PG-13 line, send photos from their gallery, and in our iPhone and Android apps can even message you first.
- If you mostly roleplay adventures, set the scene with an action in asterisks and the character steps into it.

FAQ-style quick answers
- Is c.ai down right now? Check
status.character.aiand an outage tracker. We can't see their servers. - Will I lose my chats? Outages don't normally delete history.
- Should I reinstall? Only if the status page is green and the steps above didn't help.
- How long do outages last? Usually minutes to a few hours.
How to stay ready for the next outage
Outages happen to every big AI service, so a little preparation saves a lot of frustration:
- Bookmark the status page. One tap beats a search in a panic.
- Keep notes on your long roleplays. A short summary of where the story stands (who's who, what just happened, what's at stake) lets you pick up anywhere, on any service, without losing the thread.
- Save the messages you love. Copy the replies you'd hate to lose into a notes app. Outages rarely delete anything, but a screenshot never goes down.
- Know your off-peak hours. If your evenings coincide with the US evening rush, early mornings are often noticeably faster.
- Keep a second app around. Not to replace your favourite, just so a bad night doesn't end your evening. Try it before you need it, so you already know a character you like.
Character.AI down vs your account restricted
Sometimes the problem isn't an outage. If the service works for everyone else, the app is up to date, and you still can't send messages, or a specific character or chat won't open, check whether you were logged out, whether the character was removed or made private by its creator, or whether a content filter is blocking a particular message. Rephrasing the message or starting a new chat with the same character often gets you going again. For account problems, use Character.AI's official help centre; third-party sites (including this one) can't see or fix your account.
In short
When Character.AI stops working, check the status page and an outage tracker first. If it's down for everyone, wait; if not, refresh, re-login, switch app/web, and turn off your VPN. And if you'd like to keep chatting in the meantime, say hi to someone here. The first reply comes before you sign up.
